How to use twitter to find people in your target market

I’m finding more and more that small business owners are turning to the likes of twitter and facebook for reaching their desired target market. From a beginners point of view facebook has the advantage of twitter in terms of finding and reaching people within your desired target market.

This being said what I’m going to share with you today are rarely discussed twitter tools that are going to enable you to reach your desired target market BIG TIME on twitter.

Now if you are a twitter newbie your probably looking round thinking that twitter is a) a simplified facebook and b) has very few functions c) is hard to determine who is in your actual target market. As you have probably noticed 90% of twitter activity is focused on a person’s tweets, so this being said I’m going to show you tools that we can leverage off and decify these tweets.

The first tool that I want to mention is search.twitter.com. Now this is an incredibly simple tool and you can pretty much use it just like google, however what you want to do is input text that your target market is going to be mentioning in their tweets. For example if you are in the weight loss industry you might search “lose weight”.

When you do this, this is going to bring up a whole lot of tweets that mention these two words. You need then to decify through your competition and people who are genuinely talk about the need to lose weight.

Once you find these people simply follow them and reply to their tweet. When you’re replying to their tweet don’t send them to your website straight away, start asking them relevant questions to engage them, for example “how much weight do you want to lose?”.

Use this tactic as much as you can and begin speaking to as many people as you can, aim to start 20 to 50 conversations per day! If you do this you will find that your follower base as well as your business grows extremely quickly!

The second tool that I will mention is nearbytweets.com. This tool can be used in exactly the same way as search.twitter.com however this tool gives you the ability to find people talking about a subject in a certain area. This is fantastic if you have a business that is focusing on a market within a certain geographic location.

I suggest simply starting with search.twitter.com if your business has no boundaries or if your business does have geographic boundaries then start at nearbtweets.com.

The more you engage people who are talking about a service or product that your business can provide to suit their need then the more you will become THE expert for that topic on twitter.

Happy Tweeting
